NUMBER 8 FILMS: Village People`s Can`t Stop The Mu

Forget “Xanadu”, forget “Spiceworld”, this is one of the worst musical comedies of all time. But for sheer jawdropping, camptacular awfulness, it simply cannot be beat. The story follows aspiring music producer Jack Morell (played by a scenery-chewing Steve Guttenberg) who ditches his job at a record store because he’s meant for something bigger! Rollerskating his way out of a stable career (yes really), he teams up with the inexplicably glamorous Samantha Simpson to create a pop group to end all pop groups.A series of random coincidences later, and she’s managed to assemble a cowboy, a bloke from the army, a policeman, an Indian (well, an African-American man with a head-dress and sleigh bells), a construction worker and a leatherman. All of whom can sing Morell’s perfectly-constructed disco hits. The rest of the film charts the group’s rise to fame through a series of musical numbers, culminating in “Do The Milkshake”, a would-be TV commercial that features kids dressed up as the Village People. Yes, they were mad to make this box office flop, but you would be mad to miss it. A very special one-off revival screening.
