Out Takes 2012 : Among men : Gay in East Germany
How did gay men live and love under the socialist dictatorship of East Germany? GDR ideology considered homosexuality to be a remnant of bourgeois decadent morality and harmful to a socialist society. In the first documentary on the topic, we meet six men as individual as their life stories - an East German punk, a free-thinking artist, a closeted gay teacher, a Chilean emigrant, a gay activist in the church and a craftsman living in a rural village. Even though homosexuality had not been punished in the GDR since the 1950s, the conspiracy of silence, the condemnation, the pressure to conform to society and to sexual discretion remained. All these individuals had very different strategies for survival and adjustment. A moving documentary about sexual freedom in a totalitarian system.
